Tänkvärt

onsider the following:

Firstly, let's say that: x = 1
Therefore: x² = x
And: x² - 1 = x -1
Factoring: (x - 1)(x + 1) = x - 1
By Dividing: x + 1 = 1
And so we conclude: 2 = 1

Now while this problem that you run across in many calculus classes is obviously faulty, it is important to note that we have the capacity to see the error, how it affects the entire equation, and how to fix that error. And yet, even with this reasoning capacity we still solve our global spats like 8 year olds in the school yard, use limited resources at an alarming rate, and heavily pollute the only place that is habitable within our solar system. Hmmm, pondering point perhaps?
